Economy: Business Trends Indicator

The business services sector is likely to hold steady as the highest job growth area.

ABOUT THE INDICATOR

This indicator illustrates projected job growth by industry from 1998 to 2008. It is included in this section because it shows the type of job growth the county can expect in the next several years. It is also an indicator of the diversity of the employment base in DuPage County. Although these projections are based on data prior to1998 (before the recent economic downturn), they are long-range projections and should still be considered valid indicators of future growth.

OBSERVATIONS

Projections of job growth reflect a positive economic outlook. Jobs are projected to increase for each industry sector, from auto services and garages to wholesale trade and durable goods, with the largest gain (54 percent) expected for miscellaneous business services. Business services is by far the largest employment sector in DuPage County, where service jobs—in areas including health care, education, and the food industry as well as business—predominate. Job Turnover, because of an increasing aging population and buy-outs, is an ever-increasing business trend, though not reflected in the above graph.

TAPESTRY

Job growth is a good sign for any county because it means a more stable economy, less unemployment, and overall positive contributions to the health of the county. For instance, if more people are working, they have more money to spend on arts and leisure and are in a better position to support educational and charitable institutions. Moreover, a greater number of employers in the area means a larger tax base, providing further support to public education and county health and social services. Business growth, however, can also result in more wear and tear on community highways and more traffic congestion as more people commute to their jobs. In addition, if job growth in the county leads to more people seeking homes here to be near their places of employment, housing costs could potentially increase in response to the increased demand.
