Education Community Commentary

by Darlene Ruscitti, Ed. D. Regional Superintendent of Education, DuPage County

DuPage County is one of the most well-educated counties in the nation. More than 90 percent of adult residents are high school graduates, and more than 40 percent have college degrees. What’s more, these adult residents understand the value of a good education, so they support local schools and encourage their children to succeed in school.

Per pupil spending at DuPage County schools is higher than the state average, and most of that spending is funded by local tax dollars—primarily, property taxes paid by county residents. High per pupil spending means a school is spending more on administrative and teacher salaries, which helps attract more qualified personnel, as well as on curricular materials, programs for students, and technology. All of that translates into a better education for students. The high quality of the education DuPage County elementary and high school students receive is reflected in above-average ACT scores and bodes well for future success in college and continued gains in high school and college graduation rates in the county.

Every child is entitled to a quality education and an equal chance to succeed in school. DuPage County educators are committed to those ideals, and are striving to overcome potential barriers such as economic disadvantages and language or cultural differences. The focus is on getting to know students and their learning needs well, and finding ways to connect with students so that they achieve the common high standards that they need to succeed in tomorrow’s world.
